Exploring Negative Space Photography – in northern Norway!

member's lesson preview tutorials May 30, 2024

Negative space photography is the focus of this month's members challenge at Viewfinder Mastery and Matt took the opportunity to film our latest photography lesson while sailing with friends in northern Norway. The fjords of the Lofoten archipelago were the perfect setting for practicing with this powerful photography composition technique and we hope you enjoy this preview of the lesson that we produced.

Photographing with negative space has a lot in common with minimalism photography. It's all about giving the subject lots of room to breathe (in a visual sort of way). All kinds of subjects can lend themselves to negative space photography – as we saw from the diverse submissions that came in from our members this month. The technique can be applied to landscape and nature photography just and can be just as relevant for portrait and even sports photography.

If topics like this get your creative juices going, then consider becoming a member to participate in our monthly photography challenges. You'll receive thoughtful professional feedback from our team, PLUS you'll get full access to our library of high-quality online photography classes. Join the fun and we hope to see you inside!
